BIOFEEDBACK THERAPY
For this project, it is important to understand what electromyography (EMG) data is so that it can be analyzed and used properly. EMG signals are a way to record what is going on in the muscles. According to the article Industrial Electromyography by William Marras [17], there are 4 different types of EMG signals. The first simply tells if the muscle was in use during some sort of exertion. The second is simply how much exertion the muscle is doing. The third is quite similar however, it is how the muscle reacts under restricted conditions and finally, the fourth evaluates muscle fatigue if that is a point of interest. For this particular project we will primarily focus on the second kind of signal.
The purpose of being able to refine and model these EMG signals is so that they could potentially be used in biofeedback therapy. It has been proven that biofeedback therapy can benefit those with issues in their muscles. Particularly the hands/wrist area [15].
